Role Description

This is a full-time position with remote work flexibility within Canada, with a strong preference for candidates based in Calgary or Toronto.  

 

The Project Developer will lead the development of greenfield natural gas generation and utility-scale battery energy storage projects across the Ontario and Alberta electricity markets.

 

The successful candidate will have 10–15 years of progressive experience in project development and project management for energy infrastructure in deregulated markets. A background in engineering, finance, or operations is considered an asset.

 

Working with other team members, you will manage end-to-end development activities including:

  • Site selection and control

  • Permitting, environmental assessments

  • Electrical interconnection and gas transportation agreements

  • Commercial structuring and procurement

  • Preparation for construction readiness

 

This role involves leading a multidisciplinary team of advisors and coordinating external consultants. You will be responsible for setting and managing project schedules, budgets, risk registers, and milestones, driving projects through to investment decision.

 

Strong familiarity with market rules, market participation strategies, and market operator processes in Ontario (IESO) and Alberta (AESO) is required. The position demands proven stakeholder relations skills, including working with landowners, municipalities, Indigenous communities, distribution / transmission owners, regulators, lenders, and commercial counterparties.

 

Technical literacy in gas-fired generation and battery energy storage systems (BESS), combined with the commercial acumen to translate technical and permitting risks into bankable solutions, is essential.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business, Environmental Science, or a related field (graduate degree preferred).

  • 10–15 years of experience in an energy project development and project management role.

  • Demonstrated success taking greenfield projects from concept through to Notice to Proceed (NTP) or to a Commercial Operation Date (COD).

  • Comprehensive understanding of project permitting, interconnection, market participation, and construction readiness in deregulated electricity markets.

  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams, manage consultants, and coordinate complex development schedules and budgets.

  • Experience in stakeholder relations, including consultation with municipalities, Indigenous communities, and regulators.

  • Excellent analytical, financial modeling, and negotiation skills.

  • Proficient in MS Office and familiar with project management tools (e.g., MS Project or equivalent), with working knowledge of GIS software and mapping tools (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, or equivalent).

  • Knowledge of environmental and permitting frameworks in Alberta and Ontario considered an asset.
